Starting school is a special time in a child and families life. At Whangaparāoa School we want every new child and their family to feel warmly welcomed, well informed and positive about making this important milestone successful.

Your child can start at Whangaparāoa School between age 5 and 6. Enrolling early helps us with our planning.

As soon as you've decided to join us, please get in touch with us to arrange a time for us to meet your family and show you around our school.

When you contact the school, please ask for Jane or you are welcome to email us at admin@wgp.school.nz

New Entrants Procedures and Enrolments

Whangaparāoa School has adopted the following cohort entry rule for children starting school.

We will have two intakes per term, one at the beginning of each term and a mid-term cohort throughout the year.

Children can only start school if they are 5 years old.

If you have any questions please email hsturrock@wgp.school.nz or kcronin@wgp.school.nz

We look forward to meeting you and your family.

Orientation for New Entrants

Before starting school for the first time it is important that you and your child attend our orientation programme; “Parāoa Iti" (Little Whale). During this programme you and your child will learn about our school, meet the staff, become familiar with the environment and learn about being “school ready”.

The“Parāoa Iti” programme consists of three-five consecutive sessions on Thursday mornings. The children will go with teachers to spend some time in a classroom. They will be taking part in various activities to encourage a positive transition to school. Parents and whānau will have the opportunity to meet other new parents, have a tea or coffee and receive valuable information and tips to make the transition to school as seamless as possible. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

You will be able to look through the uniform shop and we will assist you in ordering stationery during the first session.

Whānau Connect days give you and your child the opportunity to spend time together before their first day. The expectation is that you and your child attend this and you will be able to book a 30 minute slot online at a later date.

When your child has been enrolled you will receive a letter from our transition leader with information about dates and times for orientation. If you have not already enrolled, please contact the office for an enrolment pack.
