Whangaparaoa School aims to identify and provide for the learning needs of our gifted students. We have a specialist teacher who runs pull-out groups (Quest) for those identified as cognitively gifted, and opportunities for extension and enrichment in a variety of areas.

Our school offers children needing support to succeed in reading a variety of programs to meet their needs and accelerate their progress-. From one-to-one sessions, small group sessions and reading mileage programs, there is something to suit all learners and optimise learning.

Each year, senior students at our school take on a range of responsibilities across our school from reinforcing our ORCA values and positive playground behaviour to encouraging fair play and caring attitudes. Our student leaders plan, organise and run clubs, assemblies, events and groups.

At Whangaparaoa School we run a needs based, small group programme, for pupils who have English as their second language. Support includes oral and written exercises, games and activities that enhance pupils' oral language. ESOL lessons are held daily for 45 minute sessions from Monday to Thursday.

We provide a programme designed to support improvement in talking, reading and comprehension, as well as to boost confidence, language skills and understanding of English. Some individualised instruction may be provided by Ministry appointed speech therapists who visit the school.

At our school, Ongoing Resourcing Scheme, (ORS) funded students receive Teacher and Teacher Aide support through the Ministry of Education, sometimes also topped up from the school's Special Education Grant. Teacher Aide assistance develops independence, and socialisation rather than dependence on support.
