Enhanced Learning Programmes

Whangaparaoa School aims to identify and provide for the learning needs of our gifted students. We have a specialist teacher who runs pull-out groups (Quest) for those identified as cognitively gifted, and opportunities for extension and enrichment in a variety of areas.

Nature School is all about developing confidence, resilience, responsibility,
empowerment and a sense of kaitiakitanga over the land- all while engaging in
all weather Nature Play.

Each year, senior students at our school take on a range of responsibilities across our school from reinforcing our ORCA values and positive playground behaviour to encouraging fair play and caring attitudes. Our student leaders plan, organise and run clubs, assemblies, events and groups.

At Whangaparaoa School we run a needs based, small group programme, for pupils who have English as their second language. Support includes oral and written exercises, games and activities that enhance pupils' oral language. ESOL lessons are held daily for 45 minute sessions from Monday to Thursday.

This is our 4th year of Garden to Table at Whangaparāoa School and you can really see the progress in the children's knowledge and skills, it's so heartwarming. This year the Year 2/3 and 5/6 children are coming to Garden to Table for a 6 week block, which means we can delve a bit deeper into our kitchen and gardening skills.
Tomatoes, pumpkins, butternut squash, beans, rhubarb, courgette (marrows!) and watermelons are plentiful and our tamariki have been very excited to harvest and use these summer crops in the kitchen.

At our school, Ongoing Resourcing Scheme, (ORS) funded students receive Teacher and Teacher Aide support through the Ministry of Education, sometimes also topped up from the school's Special Education Grant. Teacher Aide assistance develops independence, and socialisation rather than dependence on support.
