Performing Arts

This year Whangaparaoa School is joining with Peaches and Pickles to offer an extensive range of opportunities to help students showcase and discover their talent in the performing arts.
 
MUSIC OPTIONS


Junior and Senior Choir
- School Funded - Catherine Carr
(Open to all)

A dynamic Choir led by Catherine Carr. Students will get the opportunity to learn a repertoire that can be used in assemblies, external events and competitions. Students will learn vocal technique as well as learning how to blend their voices and sing in harmony and canon.

Orchestra - School funded - Catherine Carr
(Min 4 max 20)

For students who have at least 2 years experience of playing an instrument. Students in an Orchestra learn many transferable skills including gaining confidence, teamwork, listening, coping under pressure and discipline. It will also help to improve Music Theory.

Group Keyboard - Beginner and Intermediate - Catherine Carr
(Min 4 max 6 students per session). $100 per term

This is a great introduction to learning to play the piano. Students will learn a mixture of scales, theory and repertoire. Students will have the opportunity to perform at School assemblies and other events. This may inspire them to take private lessons and work towards their ABRSM and Trinity Examinations.

Band Jam - (Min 4 max 10) - Gareth Pring
School Funded

Students must have at least 2 years experience on their instrument. Students will develop a repertoire that can be used in School, outside events and competitions. As with our Orchestra they will develop many transferable skills such as confidence, teamwork and listening.

Group Guitar -Beginners and Intermediate - Gareth Pring
(Min 4 max 6 students per session). $100 per term

This is a great introduction to learning to play the guitar. Students will learn a mixture of theory and repertoire. Students will have the opportunity to perform at School assemblies and other events. This may inspire them to take private lessons and work towards their Trinity Rock Examinations.

DANCE OPTIONS

Jazz - Junior and Senior - Colette Wilson
(Min 8 Max 25) Cost between $50 - $80 per term dependent on numbers

Students will learn a combination of technique, combination steps, rhythm and choreography in Jazz Dance. Students will have the opportunity to develop repertoire for School events and local and regional competitions.

Ballet - Junior and Senior - Colette Wilson
(Min 8 Max 25) Cost between $50 - $80 per term dependent on numbers

Students will learn a mixture of barre, centre work, adagio and allegro as well as choreography. Students will have the opportunity to develop repertoire for School events and local and regional competitions.

Hip hop - Junior and senior - Colette Wilson
(Min 8 Max 25) Cost between $50 - $80 per term dependent on numbers

Students will learn a range of choreography and technique including breaking and locking, rhythm and performance skills. Students will be part of a Junior and Senior Crew that can perform at events and competitions in School and beyond.

Irish Dancing - Colette Wilson
(Min 8 Max 25) Cost between $50 - $80 per term dependent on numbers

Irish Dance is hundreds of years old, evolving from a casual party-style dance to a competitive art form. There are two disciplines soft shoe (similar to Ballet) and hard shoe (similar to tap). Since “Riverdance’ there has been a resurgence in its popularity, but Irish Dance has a long history in New Zealand and it’s not just the children of Irish heritage who are learning.

DRAMA OPTIONS

Junior and senior Drama - Charlotte Nightingale
(Min 8 Max 25) Cost between $50 - $80 per term dependent on numbers

Students will acquire a range of skills including improvisation, characterisation, script work and vocal technique. They will gain confidence, social skills and group skills which they can use in School and beyond.

Film senior - Charlotte Nightingale
(Min 8 Max 25) Cost between $50 - $80 per term dependent on numbers

Students will have the opportunity to create their own movies. They will learn how to develop a script and bring it to life on film. They will gain vital film industry knowledge and terminology as well as learning about acting for film.

Theatresports - Charlotte Nightingale
(Min 8 Max 25) Cost between $50 - $80 per term dependent on numbers

A fun-filled mix of improvisation theatre sports games and fun. This could lead to local and national theatresports competitions. This is great for thinking on the spot, creativity, working in groups and confidence building.

Performing Arts for confidence - Charlotte Nightingale
(Min 4 Max 15) Cost between $50 - $80 per term dependent on numbers

This is a programme for students who lack confidence, are anxious and/or need support at school. Drama, dance and music is great for many aspects of a child’s social development including communication, working with others and gaining confidence.
