Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to our Week 6 newsletter. Here are this weeks bits and pieces.
STUDENT SAFETY
We are aware that some students are climbing onto our classroom roofs after school and on the weekend. We are
very concerned about this from a student safety perspective, but also many of these roofs have skylights which
the children could fall through. Please ask your children to stay off the roofs. We have rung the families
of the children concerned.
TSUNAMI
ALL PARENTS ! Please note if there is ever a tsunami warning the collection point
for your child will be Whangaparaoa Playcentre on Stanmore Bay Rd. We need to evacuate to a high point in very
quick time and cannot afford to have parents arriving at school looking for children and holding up the evacuation.
This would put other children and staff at risk. Thanks.
LEARNING CELEBRATION - 20 September 2018
On Thursday 20 September, our school will finish at 12.45pm so we can have a Learning Celebration afternoon and
evening with our parents.
We are offering parents the opportunity to choose a 30-minute timeslot. In this time students will share their
learning, their goals, their proud moments, examples of their work and details of their classroom. The teacher
will also schedule a time slot per family (during the conference time) to answer any specific questions the
student or parents may have. Further booking information here.

ATTENTION YEAR 4 WHANAU

WRITING CAMP- OCTOBER 1ST - 4TH
Whangaparaoa School are lucky enough to have been asked to
host a Writing Camp during the first four days of the October holiday. The cost of the camp is $195 and will
be held on our school premises. All Y5/6 students have been given a leaflet promoting the camp and we hope
to see lots of them there. The camp is open to all students on the Coast Years 5 – 10. There are only 30 places
so you need to book quickly. The leaflet gives you a little more information and tells you how to book.
The purpose of the Writing Camp is to give all budding writers the opportunity to work with a real live author
to increase their knowledge in the craft of writing.
The author running our camp is Maria Gill. Maria is a Kiwi writer known for her many books (well over 40) which
look at the world around us – with a particular view at looking at New Zealand and its place in the world.

Maria visited us during our Book Week in Term 1 and introduced us all to the merits of non-fiction writing.
The children will work on their own projects and have the full attention of Maria Gill.

YUMMY STICKERS!!
It's that time of the year already where the Yummy Sticker Promotion of 2018
is nearing its end. Time to get those stickers in and do a hard push to the end of the term. Last year we were
able to purchase sport equipment for the school and this year it will be no different. A huge Thank You to
all you wonderful collectors who have done a fantastic job so far! I can't wait to tally up the totals. Go
Yummy Stickers!
NETBALL - END OF YEAR PRIZE GIVING
The annual Netball Prize Giving will be held on Wednesday
12 September at 7pm in the School Hall. The Whangaparaoa Netball Committee would like to warmly invite ALL
players, their families and team Coaches and Managers along to celebrate a fantastic season of Netball at our
school! We look forward to seeing you all there.
