PAY IT FORWARD MUFTI
Tomorrow Thursday 13 April we will finish the term with a school mufti day. The theme will be:
come dressed in something you love doing, your passion, your interest or maybe your dream of
someone or something you would like to be in the future. The charge for mufti is voluntary
and any money raised will go into a pay it forward account to help our families who may struggle
to afford technology, a decent lunch, Friday experiences or trips like camp.
Term one is nearly over and it is timely therefore to thank everyone for your commitment, support, encouragement and collaboration. Our aim is to work together to inspire learning and the more we can do this, the more the children will benefit. We have initiated some exciting changes and I would like to thank you all for your tolerance, patience and being open to change and try things. We look forward to all the opportunities Term 2 will offer. I would like to wish all of our staff and all of our families a fabulous Easter and term break with lots of rest and fun times. See you all on May 1.
In light of recent reports in the media we suggest
you take the time to have a chat with your children regarding stranger danger. Make your children aware of
possible enticements such as lollies, puppies and money and what they should do if they encounter these situations.

LEARNING CELEBRATION INTRODUCTION
At Whangaparaoa School we believe and see that the children are very capable. We have high expectations and have learnt not to underestimate children as they constantly surprise us when given opportunities.
Our teaching and learning vision of “Connect, Challenge, Empower”aligns itself well with this belief, and we aim
to empower our children to take responsibility for their learning and ultimately their lives. This means that
during teaching, children share in the process of knowing what the learning goal is, why they are learning
this and how they show that they have learnt it. We encourage them to talk about their learning, assess their
learning and to look at their work with reference to other models. The child can then work with their support
team (teachers and families) on next learning steps and ways to grow.
This year we are asking all our students to lead a learning celebration with their parents. Directly below
is a brief outline.
WHAT: Student Learning Celebration
WHEN: Wednesday 24 May 2017
On Wednesday 24 May, our school will finish at 12.30pm so we can have a learning celebration afternoon and evening
with our parents.
We are offering parents the opportunity to choose a 45-minute timeslot. In this time students will share their
learning, their goals, their proud moments, examples of their work and details of their classroom. The teacher
will also schedule a time slot per family (during the conference time) to answer any specific questions the
student or parents may have.
- Students will lead this celebration time.
- There will be between 5 and 10 minutes time planned for the teacher to share with each student and family.
- If there are bigger matters that need discussing, these need to be deferred to a separate meeting time.
- The student should be a key person in this time. Our belief is that if the discussion is about the student,
their learning and wellbeing, then they need to be involved.
- If there is something personal that you would like to discuss only with the teacher, please let the teacher
- In the other 30 minutes your child will have lots to share with you.
- There will be up to 5 other families in the room at the same time sharing their child’s learning journey.
- If your child gives you all the information you need, it is your choice whether you take the time with the
teacher, or not.
- Our staff are working from 12.30 to 7.30pm to provide this opportunity. Please look after them.
- On a rare occasion when we have a parent come in who is upset about something; our advice is – Respect the
Person.“The problem is the problem; the person is never the problem” Control your emotions and think “How
can I help?”
