****GALA UPDATE****
NEW DATE - SATURDAY 18th MARCH
Gala is much more fun without your gumboots! Due to the awful weather forecast
and the very high likelihood the field will be too wet to use, the Gala committee
has decided to postpone the gala for one week.
The roster and volunteer schedule remains the same. If you can't do the same time
next week (18th) please email: samantha.cranston@gmail.com
Please also reschedule your baking efforts for next week!!
We are NOT opening up for donations of more white elephant / books
/ clothes, BUT we do still need MORE jams / pickles / chutneys and Tombola
jars.
There are lots of empty jars still in the hall, along with washing and sorting
to be done! Please pop in!
We are still short of volunteers, especially in the security area, if you have
some time to commit that would be awesome!
Looking forward to a fun (and dry) Gala!
Kind regards Gala committee

DEAR PARENTS, WHANAU, AND FRIENDS OF WHANGAPARAOA SCHOOL
Feedback received from last years community meetings, via email and conversation highlighted that
there are concerns about the costs of adopting some of the new initiatives for our school,
such as the chromebooks.
Members of our community expressed interest in creating a fund to support families in genuine hardship
circumstances, and then contributing towards this fund.
The Board of Trustees feel this is an awesome suggestion and reflects the great community spirit
of Whangaparaoa.
As a result the Board is creating a budget and contributing an amount annually to support our families.
If, as parents you would like to contribute to such a fund that would help others, can you
please contact the office or Kevin directly. Your assistance will be very gratefully accepted.
Kevin and the leadership team will administer this fund at their discretion and in complete confidence.
If you have any concerns or questions, please contact me.
Kind regards Brad Gibbons, on behalf of the Whangaparaoa school Board of Trustees
LEARNING ASSISTANTS We extend a warm welcome to the following learning assistants
who have joined our teaching staff this week - Raewyn Duffy, Natalie Sweet, Marissa Steyn,
Hayley Alison, Claire Sweetman, Lizzie Dickie, Elaine Randell, Penny Finn, Claire Gallagher,
Kim van der Loos, Marnie MacDonald, Debbie Hayman, Kate Green and Sarah Woodward.
We really look forward to working with you to support our student’s learning in the classroom.
PROPERTY - YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE This year, we are eligible for our next 5 year
allocation of funds from the Ministry, to enhance our school property. The Board of Trustees
are very interested in hearing what our parent community feels are our most pressing property
issues, and what we should spend our money on. Basically, we will get about $600,000 to maintain,
improve or build new property over a 5 year period. This amount would buy 2 new classrooms.
So please look around the school and if you have ideas about where we should next prioritise
property money, please email kcronin@wgp.school.nz before Thursday March 16.
UNIFORM Thanks everyone for the magnificent effort to raise expectations around
uniform. We are conscious some students are still not wearing the required uniform and we will
be working with them and their families to support correct uniform being worn. With wetter
and cooler weather coming, please be aware that students can wear non uniform jackets and raincoats
to and from school, but once at school, the school polar fleece and appropriately coloured
polypropylenes, thermals and skivvies are the accepted uniform items.
Have a great week everyone!
From Kevin

COGNITIVE ABILITY SCREENING TESTS Every year since 2009 Whangaparaoa School
has offered Cognitive ability screening to further help identify our gifted students - those
with high cognitive ability. An assessor from Educational Assessment Services comes to school
to carry out this screening. Teachers help to identify students in a number of ways, looking
at school test results and observing specific traits or abilities in children, and some of
these students are put forward for cognitive screening. However, we may not see the same child
that you see at home. If you feel that your child is possibly gifted, you may put their name
forward to be looked into further. Some characteristics of giftedness can be found here. Please contact Debbie
Thompson if you would like to chat or to nominate your child. dthompson@wgp.school.nz Please
note that there will be a charge for parents to contribute to the cost if selected for Cognitive
testing - approx $30. Screening will start late March for this term.
