WESTPAC HELICOPTER
ANNUAL APPEAL MUFTI DAY
On Friday May 26 we will have
a mufti day to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter annual appeal. Dress in mufti
- wear a wig or facial hair - Please bring along a gold coin donation to support this much
needed service.

EDUCATION PIECE
In weeks coming up we are going to try and include an education
piece. This could be highlighting why we do things (there are many new families and keeping
them informed is important), answering a parent request topic, or reporting on something current
that is happening in education. If you have anything you would like to know more about, send
an email through to the office.
HOMEWORK
At Whangaparaoa School we believe that after a full day of learning
children need to go home and have the opportunity to rest, relax or enjoy family time and other
learning opportunities like sport, martial arts, culture, dance, art or other hobbies. We think
that sending children home to do work and making it compulsory places unnecessary pressure
on children and their families. We think children should have time to be children, to play,
to have fun and to be fresh for the next day. As a matter of interest there is no evidence
that shows setting homework between 5 and 10 years will result in academic improvement.
We recommend children talking about their learning at home, we recommend reading and sharing a
book, we recommend doing anything to prepare well for tomorrow so that it is a success. If
children choose to do some work, that is fantastic, if you want to do more work with your child
that is your choice and there are plenty of great websites to explore. Please ask yourself
though, “ do I like the thought of going home to work ?”
KAPA HAKA
Parents have been asking about kapa haka. We have had kapa haka happening
in different forms this year which are advertised on the daily Panui at school. We are embracing
a range of opportunities, including the traditional kapa haka. We have poi, ti rakau/sticks,
whai/string games and waiata joining Passion Friday choices and students can attend without
cost. We are always looking for talented whanau to join us in presenting Tikanga, Te Reo and
Te Ao Maori to our school. If you know someone who can help us in this area please let Gordie
Palmer know. We will be taking a group of performers to Whangaparaoa Public Library on 14 June
to celebrate Matariki.
MILK
A couple of parents have been asking about milk organisation. With the
work we are doing on classes and learning environments the milk space has been captured for
this need. We are also reviewing the organisation as it did impact on children's learning time
and it does create a workload for staff. If you would like to discuss organisation for milk
and would be prepared to help please email kcronin@wgp.school.nz
PROPERTY
We have had incidents of children's clothing and shoes going missing.
We ask that if parents see any items come home with your child that are not your childs, please
do the right thing and return it to the teacher. Please ensure all uniform items are clearly
named.

E-LEARNING MEETING
On Wednesday 31 May from 6.30 to 7.30pm in the school staffroom there will be a parent information evening presenting how we are progressing on our journey
with e-Learning. The agenda for the evening will be:
- What we have achieved so far!
- Teacher tools.
- Google Apps for Education.
- Student tools for learning - sites / apps.
- The SAMR model for integrating technology.
- Good sites for learning at home.
NETSAFE
On Wednesday 7 June, there will be a parent evening with a presentation
by NetSafe. The purpose of this evening is to help parents with aspects of keeping students
safe online. Time: 7.00 to 8.00pm Venue: School Staffroom. The presentation will cover:
- Digital Safety / Citizenship.
- Tips for keeping safe online at home.
- Things to be aware of /keep in mind for families to keep children safe online.
TERM 2 LEARNING CELEBRATION
On Wednesday 24 May, our school will finish at
12.30pm so we can have a learning celebration afternoon and evening with our parents.
Two important pieces of information:
1. Our children are currently working very hard so they can present their learning to parents
next week. If this day and circumstances mean you just can’t make it into school, the children
can have the option of presenting their learning to Gordie, Warren, Barbara or Kevin. The child
can let the class teacher know if they would like to do this.
2. The learning celebration is a special time for the child and their parents
to share learning. Siblings are welcome to play in the grounds away from the classes or they
can go to the library and they will be supervised by Mrs Taylor.
We are offering parents the opportunity to choose a 45-minute timeslot. In this time students
will share their learning, their goals, their proud moments, examples of their work and
details of their classroom. The teacher will also schedule a time slot per family (during
the conference time) to answer any specific questions the student or parents may have.

SCHOOL PAINTING WORKING BEE
Last Saturday a group of parents volunteered
to help with some work (mainly painting) around our school. This Saturday, May 20, we would
like to ask if there are some parents who could give us a couple of hours to help finish
off the work we started. We need a few more helpers to do some painting in the afternoon
from 1.30pm for 2 - 2.5 hours. If you are available to lend a hand can you please let Helen

CHESS COACHING
We have a qualified chess coach available to come to school on Thursday lunchtimes
in B9. If you would like your child to learn new skills and tricks and practice their chess game please fill
in the form attached here or email dthompson@wgp.school.nz.
There is a charge for the tutoring on Thursdays to cover the cost of the coach - approx $12-$15 per week depending
on numbers. This will be confirmed by email once numbers are clear. Please note: This is separate to the free
chess club run at school on Tuesday lunchtimes - anyone is welcome then from beginners to experts. Children
can come to both if they want.
CHARGING OF CHROMEBOOKS
A reminder that students need to charge their Chrome Books overnight
ready for the start of the school day. Thanks.
 
FOSTER HOPE PYJAMA DRIVE
Every year Foster Hope runs a Pyjama Drive to collect new pyjamas
for children who are placed in foster care. Many of the 5,000 children in foster care in NZ each year have
never had a brand new pair of pyjamas of their very own and knowing that someone has shopped for them is a
huge boost to their self-esteem. Some foster children tend to feel like a bit like second hand kids themselves
and anything we can do to help them feel loved, valued and have a positive experience can make a big difference.
Foster Hope aims to collect 5,000 pairs of new pyjamas in 2017. New pyjamas, from size 0 – 16 are needed, especially
sizes 12-16.
Pyjamas can be dropped into the Whangaparaoa Primary School office, and will be passed onto our children in
need. Thank you for making a huge difference to these kids!
