WATER FUN
- Next week each vertical learning community is invited to have a water fun day where they can
bring a water gun or water bottle to school for a water battle at lunchtime.
- Monday - T1, T2, T3, T4, M3 and M4 have their opportunity. On Tuesday B3, B4, B5, B6, B7 and
B8. On Wednesday O1, O2, O3, O4, B1 and B2. On Thursday A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 and A6. On Friday
L3, L4, L5, M1 and M2. Please note, no water balloons are allowed. The water guns or bottles
will come to the child’s classroom and stay there until lunchtime. They then use them,
return them to the classroom and at 3pm take them home. There will be safety rules for
students - caps and goggles can be useful.
DEVICES Thank you very much parents for your patience and working with us to
bring devices into the school. It is a big initiative and we will be taking small steps with
our students and teachers to grow into how we can best use devices to support student learning.
We had some initial teething issues on Monday trying to get everyone set up, but thanks to
Warren Steel, Mark Shearer, teachers and Total Team Solutions we are moving forward. Thanks
also to the parents who are emailing us, giving us feedback and letting us know of any concerns.
By working together, we will be way more effective in achieving our e-learning goals.
PASSION FRIDAYS We have received lots of positive feedback and lots of questions
as we step forward to create some extra opportunities for students. Please realise this is
the start of a bigger picture where, as the year progresses, we hope to expand the range of
options to include sporting, cultural, arts and other endeavours. Many of these activities
will be taken by staff and not incur a charge.
Commonly asked questions are:
Q. Do children have to do this ?
A. No, this is an opportunity for students to extend their experience in an area they have
a passion for.
Q. What happens to the students who do not take up these options ?
A. They will stay in their classroom and learning community.
Q. Why can’t they do these activities at lunchtime ?
A. Time and lack of space make this difficult. We need to fit in with tutors’ timetables and
commitments. Many of these options need a greater span of time than the break time allows.
We are also trying to make Fridays a different day from Monday to Thursday where reading, writing,
maths and inquiry dominate. School events like muftis, assemblies, theme days and Jump Jam,
will mostly be on Fridays too. Our aim is to finish the school week with a real buzz about
the place and have children excited about their passions and getting back to school next week.
Q. Why are we having to pay ?
A. There are options where no payment is needed. These will increase as the year progresses.
In order to acquire people who have different skillsets for the students to learn from, we
need to pay the tutors of these options. The Ministry do not give us any more staffing other
than the class teachers.
Q. What happens with children who have talent in an area and the family is currently under financial
pressure.
A. Most of these activities will be introduced in class. If a teacher sees that a student has
awesome skills in an area, and knows they are restrained by finance to take up an option, they
will let the organisers know and we will endeavour to support these students into the option.
Q. Why Peaches and Pickles and are they going to make a lot of money out of this ?
A. Peaches and Pickles staff are known by us and also parents in our community. They came to
us with the concept of how we could expose students to more of the Performing Arts options.
We also realised that we wanted to increase the options for students in this area.
Peaches and Pickles are working with our school and the payments made by parents, pay for the tutors
of the options.
PLEASE NOTE STUDENT RETURN FORMS ARE DUE TO THE OFFICE TOMORROW
Have a great week everyone!
