WHANGAPARAOA LIBRARY
On the weekend I had the pleasure of popping into the Whangaparaoa Library. What a great resource this is for our community. There were lots of parents there reading with their children and choosing books. There was also a fantastic art display by Kaitlyn and Aimee Weir. Well done girls!

ASSEMBLY
This Friday is a full school assembly. We welcome parents and hope you will enjoy the things we celebrate as a school, as well as a singalong. Please note the entry for parents coming to assembly are the doors that open out onto the Motutapu Rd school carpark. Assembly starts at 2.20pm.

MUFTI FOR A COURSE
Each year we get many requests from organisations asking us to raise and give money to their charity. We have decided we will have a maximum of two mufti days per term. One of these days will be an opportunity for us to raise money for an outside organisation. If you have a charity you would like to nominate for consideration for a gold coin mufti, please forward it to the office in the next week. Once we have a list of charities we will ask the children to find out more about these organisations. The children will then vote for the organisation they think is most worthy. The two places with the most votes will get our term 3 and 4 mufti money. Next year, we will repeat this process.

MILK UPDATE
We have been doing a lot of thinking and talking about milk organisation at school. Unfortunately we have not had any parents offer to help with the organisation.

Our suggestion is to capture the milk for some children who may need it each day - the children who don’t have food for the day. We would get a set amount to start and monitor uptake weekly. The milk would go in the fridge in sickbay and be given by our office staff to a child when they have no food, or if a teacher refers a child to the office.

Our main reasons for changing our milk organisation are : this way we are not wasteful and just drinking milk for the sake of it ; we also are avoiding huge organisation and management for teachers or parents ; we are not taking up space in a room ; we are containing the litter in the environment due to milk ; and we are giving milk to children with a need and potentially allowing milk to go elsewhere where it may be needed more.

LATENESS
At present we have a number of students arriving late to school on a regular basis. Arriving late to class, after the morning bell, is disruptive to the students and their classroom learning. Please ensure children arrive  in time to prepare for their day ahead. Students can arrive from 8.30am and be ready to start the school day by 8.55am.

EDUCATION PIECE
Vertical Learning Communities. This year we have structured the school so we have 5 Vertical Learning Communities (mini schools). Each community has a lead teacher and at least 6 classes of varying levels. In organising our school this way we are able to spread our leadership opportunities 5 ways, we can spread our talent of teachers 5 ways and we can spread our children 5 ways. For most of the time children will stay in a classroom with others around their own age. If however, there is a good reason to move them to another level to help extend them, then that can happen in their community. We are also finding that children can enjoy the company of different aged children at times too. As the year progresses we see other opportunities like Passion Fridays for teachers within a community to use their talents. We are also just starting up inter community sport at lunchtime with soccer being the first competition. Each year the communities will change so children will get to know children from other communities. The aim is that as they go through the school the children get to know many other children of their own age and different ages, which will enhance the community feel in our school and also outside our school grounds.

We have had some great recipes sent in but we NEED MORE for our cookbook to be a success!

HELP FRUITWORLD TO SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL
Over the next few days every child will receive a 5% discount Fruitworld voucher (to be spent at the WGP store only).

VOLUNTEER FIRE FIGHTERS NEEDED
We're desperately short on volunteers, and are running a recruitment information night on Monday 12 June at 6:30 pm at the Manly Fire Station. We have the capacity to have 24 volunteers but currently have 14, turning out to approximately 500 calls a year. If you're interested at all, you and your partner are more then welcome to attend this evening.
