Community Notices

Dear Parents and Students,

CAMP
I am going to put a plug in for our staff who have provided outdoor education for our year 3 and 4 children over the last week. This is a massive commitment and responsibility. The new health and safety regulations are enough to turn many teachers away from even trying to take children out of school. Yet here our teachers were setting our children all sorts of exciting and new challenges. Not only were half of the staff away from their own homes but staff do not sleep easy until the week is done, because they are continuously trying to think through every little thing to keep the children engaged, having fun, and then returned home safely to their family.

Ka mau te wehi - thats awesome. Thank you so much to our great teachers.

LEARNING CELEBRATION - 20 September 2018
On Thursday 20 September, our school will finish at 12.45pm so we can have a Learning Celebration afternoon and evening with our parents.

We are offering parents the opportunity to choose a 30-minute timeslot. In this time students will share their learning, their goals, their proud moments, examples of their work and details of their classroom. The teacher will also schedule a time slot per family (during the conference time) to answer any specific questions the student or parents may have. Further booking information here.

THANK YOU

  • Thanks for the donations from the mufti last Friday. We appreciate being able to support the Paralympic and Parasport fund.
  • Thanks to Whangaparaoa Kindergarten who hosted a kindy and early childhood centre kapahaka festival here on Tuesday. It was a great opportunity for our kapahaka group to perform during Maori Language Week.
  • Thanks to Parents for booking into your child’s learning celebration meeting in week 9. The children love this opportunity to share their learning and their classroom with you.
  • Thanks to Everyone for your effort to follow our uniform regulations. Wearing “All Black” shoes and our school polar fleeces has really smartened up the appearance of our children and it makes them feel proud too.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
On Tuesday the fire alarm was activated. The response from our children who were out at break playing was awesome and they all went to their evacuation areas. There was no fire, a child had accidentally raised the alarm. This results in the fire brigade coming as we just can’t ring and say it is a false alarm. This callout costs a considerable amount of money and time for everyone. Could we please ask parents (especially of younger children) to reinforce to their children to stay well away from the alarms, unless there is a real fire. Thanks.

ARRIVAL TIME AT SCHOOL
Each weekday morning we enjoy seeing our students playing, socialising and generally preparing for their school day before the bell rings at 8.55am. We would like to remind parents that the students are not to arrive at school before 8.30am. This is a time when staff are busy preparing for their day. Thank you.

Have a great week
Kevin

NEW ENTRANTS 2019
If you have a child who will be starting with us any time in 2019 please email your child's name, birthdate, preschool, address and a contact number to nwinter@wgp.school.nz and next time you are passing the office call in and pick up an enrolment pack. BUS CHANGES FOR THE HIBISCUS COAST, NORTH SHORE AND WARKWORTH
From Sunday 30 September 2018, Auckland Transport will implement a new bus network on the North Shore, and in Warkworth and on the Kowhai Coast. We’re also making changes to Hibiscus Coast bus timetables.

The changes are significant, so it’s important that everyone hears about the changes before 30 September. We’re implementing a comprehensive information campaign, but we’d really appreciate your help to spread the word! View details here.

YEAR 5 & 6 WRITING CAMP- OCTOBER 1ST - 4TH
Whangaparaoa School are lucky enough to have been asked to host a Writing Camp during the first four days of the October holiday. The cost of the camp is $195 and will be held on our school premises. All Y5/6 students have been given a leaflet promoting the camp and we hope to see lots of them there. The camp is open to all students on the Coast Years 5 – 10. There are only 30 places so you need to book quickly. The leaflet gives you a little more information and tells you how to book.

The purpose of the Writing Camp is to give all budding writers the opportunity to work with a real live author to increase their knowledge in the craft of writing.

The author running our camp is Maria Gill. Maria is a Kiwi writer known for her many books (well over 40) which look at the world around us – with a particular view at looking at New Zealand and its place in the world. You can find out more about Maria by visiting her website here
Maria visited us during our Book Week in Term 1 and introduced us all to the merits of non-fiction writing.

The children will work on their own projects and have the full attention of Maria Gill.

If you have any further questions or would like to enrol for this camp please contact Libby Staden-Lea in A3 or visit the website here.
